We went into Skokie for our weekly ice skating.
While I was skating today, I was trying to recall on the short lessons that Mike had given us. I remembered that he once said that braking is something you act on rather than something you would think about. "You just turn one foot in and apply pressure."

I tried to follow his advice, but I was thinking about it so much that I slightly picked my foot up somehow and accidentally jammed my blade into the ice... resulting in me face-planting the ice. I told myself, "it's okay... practicing people fall, it was only a first attempt."

During my wall practice session, I did what Mike said, I cleared my head and I practiced blade pressure with some carving. I made a good amount of snow to put on my injured knees from another fall.

On my second attempt, I skated fast, I cleared my thoughts, I turned my foot inwards, applied mid-pressured force...
and then....
I heard a really loud grinding noise coming from my skates!!!

Can you imagine the huge smile across my face?!
For way too long have I been skating fast without any means of stopping, except for intentional crashes into the walls. As I came to a complete stop I yelled, "WAHAHAHAHA, I'M SO HAPPY!!! I CAN BRAKE!!! I CAN BRAKE!!! I WANNA CELEBRATE!!! BUY ME A COKE MIKI!!!!!"

Mike was watching me from the other side of the rink, he saw my actual braking and my enthusiasm. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Mike accelerating towards me. Mike skated up really fast and about exactly one yard from me, he does an advanced brake... completely spraying and covering me with snow...

Anyone ever seen "Kung-Fu Dunk?"
This reminds me of a scene where Jay Chou's character is flawlessly throwing empty drink cans into a garbage can from a far distance. There is an old man that was watching him. As soon as Jay's character sits down, the old man tries to mimic Jay's character by trying to throw the trash into the garbage can. The old man fails after numerous attempts, he still missed the trash can when he was standing 5 inches away! At last, he finally gets the trash into the garbage can only because his hand was right in front of it. After the old man's accomplishment, he starts cheering and laughing. Just as the old man was celebrating,  from far away, Jay's character kicks up another can from the ground and then jump-kicks it perfectly into the trash can and he just walks off whistling. The old man gets this priceless look on his face.
Oh the pownage.

The more skilled the skater,
the wider the brake mark...
Time for pictures (marks are highlighted for visibility):

This is my brake mark, the work of a beginner...

The work of a skilled skater (Mike)...

Anyways... I'm extremely happy and feel so accomplished today.
I thought I would never be able to learn how to brake!
I proved myself wrong!!!
BRAKE TODAY, SKATE BACKWARDS(YEAH RIGHT, NO WAY) NEXT WEEK!!!!!

I will have my revenge Mike!!!
Until next time, bye again.
